The Shiksha Kendra of DPS Gurgaon, a beacon of innovative education for the first-generation learners, was founded by philanthropists and patrons, Mrs. and Mr. Ravi Jaipuria. It has thrived under the inspiring leadership of Ms. Devyani Jaipuria, Pro-Vice Chairperson, whose unwavering dedication to inclusive education continues to shape its transformative journey. Recipient of the prestigious Indian CSR Award, Ms. Jaipuria, embodies the essence of visionary leadership. Her unwavering dedication to transformative initiatives like Shiksha Kendra has not only shaped the future of the underprivileged children but has also empowered countless individuals to dream beyond limitations. Through her empathetic vision, she fosters hope and creates lasting change, turning challenges into opportunities for growth. Shiksha Kendra’s recognition as one of the ‘Top 3 Education Support Initiatives of the Year – 2024’ is a testament to Ms. Jaipuria’s relentless pursuit of educational equity and empowerment. The dream and its realisation were brought to life through the steadfast commitment of Ms. Aditi Misra, Director Principal, who has been instrumental in shaping Shiksha Kendra’s philosophy and guiding its growth.
Established in 2003 with only 50 students, which quickly grew to 200 students, it has grown into a thriving institution, empowering nearly 20,000 students over two decades.
Shared Resources and Infrastructure (Model of Sustainability)
Shiksha Kendra benefits from shared resources with the principal school, including lab facilities like-science, math, art and computer, smartboards, along with the school transportation. The parent school also covers all essential expenses, such as books, uniforms, stationery, and a daily mid-day snack, ensuring no financial burden is placed on the parents. The student-led clubs — Team Shiksha Kendra and the Interact Club, collaboratively design experiential co-curricular activities, cultivating creativity, leadership, collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and digital fluency among the Shiksha Kendra students. Through peer teaching and shared initiatives, they foster holistic growth, inclusivity, and global citizenship, building a culture of lifelong learning, and social impact.
Dedicated Faculty
Shiksha Kendra’s team of 60 qualified teachers, guided by an experienced teacher in charge, provides quality education across all grades. With some teachers serving for almost two decades, their long-standing commitment to the institution is a testament to their passion for teaching. Regular workshops and classroom training sessions ensure continuous professional development.
National Institute Of Open Schooling (NIOS)
National Institute of Open Schooling is an initiative of the Ministry of HR wherein the students of classes III, V, and VIII appear for the examinations conducted by Open Basic Education (OBE). Assessments are conducted through four Formative Assessments (FA) and two Summative Assessments (SA) throughout the year. These assessments are designed to evaluate the progress of the students. It is encouraging to note that the school has consistently achieved 100% meritorious results. Additionally, regular PTMs are held for parents to engage with teachers and stay informed about their child’s progress.
Scholastic Framework
The Shiksha Kendra pedagogical framework emphasises equitable learning opportunities by combining innovative teaching methods with the existing educational system to achieve holistic development. Computer is taught as a subject starting from Class III onwards. Academically bright children are integrated into the principal school, where they are provided free education to continue their learning journey.
Financial Assistance for Higher Education
Shiksha Kendra ensures its graduates continue their educational journey by offering sponsorships for college education, funded by a corpus established by outgoing class XII students of the principal school.
Co-Scholastic Activities
Shiksha Kendra offers a wide variety of co-scholastic activities designed to foster creativity, teamwork, and holistic development. Students participate in initiatives such as the Tree Plantation Drive, where they receive saplings to plant both at school and at home, promoting environmental awareness. Art and Craft activities include making soft toys, bookmarks, rakhi, festive masks, rangolis, and best out of waste, etc. encouraging artistic expression. National Day celebrations feature special assemblies with patriotic songs, poem recitations, and oratory speeches, enhancing public speaking skills. The Atal Tinkering Lab of the principal school provides hands-on training for students to create innovative projects, like transforming a toy into a scientific model. Music classes offer students opportunities to explore their passion for singing, while developing vocal skills and confidence. Street plays allow students to express emotions, raise awareness, and foster creativity. The library organises book exchanges and Scholastic Fair to nurture reading habits, while picnics provides a fun, memorable bonding experience outside the classroom. Sports Day, with a specific emphasis on yoga and track events, encourages physical development through inter/intra-class matches. Special assemblies raise awareness on topics such as environment, health, hygiene, and current issues, utilising dance, music, PPTs and speeches to engage students.
Inter-School Events
Shiksha Kendra students actively participate in a range of inter-school events that promote cultural awareness, scientific innovation, and academic excellence. Various clubs of the principal school such as the Interact Club, Team Shiksha Kendra, Kaizan- the Commerce Club, Node – the computer club, Redshift, Allotropes, and Pulse -the three Science clubs to name a few, take the lead in organising diverse events and activities that provide Shiksha Kendra students with invaluable learning opportunities. Through these initiatives, students are introduced to a wide range of skills, such as digital literacy, financial literacy, cybercrime awareness and other scholastic and co-scholastic proficiencies. By participating in these well curated activities, Shiksha Kendra students not only enhance their knowledge and skill sets but also develop confidence and a sense of achievement. Their active participation has often earned them accolades, showcasing their talents and reinforcing their potential to excel on larger platforms.
The International Connect
The students of Shiksha Kendra actively engage with the foreign students visiting the principal school under the Student Exchange Programme. These interactions provide a unique opportunity for them to gain deeper cultural insights and broaden their global perspectives. Through RWYC (Reconnecting With Your Culture), students engage in international events such as cultural programmes, and painting competitions, fostering a deeper connection with their heritage.
Bridging Communities
Shiksha Kendra’s students play an integral role in events of the principal school, such as presenting cultural programmes at graduation ceremonies and performing on the sports day. These experiences foster a sense of belonging and unity within the school community.
DPS Outreach Initiatives
Through crowdfunding initiatives led by the students of the principal school, the Shiksha Kendra community receives valuable support, for example, the gifting of festive wear and the distribution of sports gear. These initiatives are thoughtfully adapted each year to meet the community's shifting needs, fostering a culture of care and generosity.
Annual Initiatives
Shiksha Kendra is supported by several heart-warming initiatives by the principal school that promote academic collaboration and community service. Students from classes IX to XII dedicate three days a week to provide academic help to Shiksha Kendra students, while teachers also stay after hours to conduct lessons across all subjects. During Daan Utsav—Make a Meal, students come together to contribute raw vegetables and pav, which are transformed into a delicious pav bhaji meal for the children of Shiksha Kendra. The Garage Sale is another initiative, where gently used items such as clothes, blankets, and bags etc. are sold at nominal prices to Shiksha Kendra families, fostering a sense of community. Sahyog – The Carnival provides Shiksha Kendra children with a day of fun games and activities while raising funds that go towards supporting Shiksha Kendra initiatives. Additionally, the Joy of Giving activity during the winter season has DPS Gurgaon students act as Secret Santas, fulfilling the wish lists of Shiksha Kendra students, spreading joy, and embodying the true spirit of Christmas.
Healthcare and Well-Being
A comprehensive health check-up is conducted for all students by collaborating with external health agencies, covering eye examination, as well as blood tests. Students who need spectacles are provided with them at no cost, and those diagnosed with anaemia receive iron supplements to enhance their health.
An annual health awareness initiative for Shiksha Kendra parents, in collaboration with the Indian Cancer Society, includes workshops on critical health issues such as cancer awareness and prevention. Mothers also benefit from a special session on breast cancer, which includes a free mammography camp.
Success Stories
Shiksha Kendra's alumni continue to achieve remarkable success, embodying the values of perseverance and self-belief instilled during their time at the school.
Shalu Kumari Chobey, a 2016 alumna, is currently employed at Deloitte, having joined on 1st January 2025.
Simranjeet Kaur, a 2022 alumna, has been awarded a full-ride scholarship to pursue a Nursing degree at Wesleyan College, Georgia, in the United States, and she generously mentors current students in English during her summer breaks.
Sujit Mandal, a 2024 alumnus, has successfully completed his army training and is now serving in the Regiment of Artillery in Nashik, marking a significant milestone in his career.
